Tear Gas Forces Man To Surrender After Standoff On SR 827
Tuesday, May 14th, 2013
(FREMONT) - A man wanted for failure to appear out of Wabash County was taken into custody early Tuesday night after police fired tear gas into a home on State Road 827 near 400 North to end a three hour standoff. Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer says 44-year-old Kenneth Eltzroth was taken into custody at about 7:35pm after he barricaded himself inside of the home south of Fremont when police went there to serve him the Wabash County warrant. The standoff forced the shutdown of a two mile portion of State Road 827 as police set up a parameter and tried to set up negotiations with Eltzroth. He was wanted on several drug charges and for not appearing at a jury trial. Troyer said they got a tip from Wabash County authorities about where he might be. Eltzroth refused to talk with police negotiators and the decision was made for the Northeast Indiana SWAT team to fire tear gas into the home. Eltzroth then came out of the house and gave himself up. Troyer said Tuesday evening as soon as Eltzroth was decontaminated from the tear gas, he would be turned over to Wabash County authorities. Fremont and Angola Police along with Fremont firefighters, Steuben County EMS and Steuben County Communications assisted the Sheriffs Department.

INDOT says the project is part of a bridge maintenance contract with work taking place throughout the Fort Wayne area over the next several months.
